Calculated from each city’s sunrise and sunset for a level horizon. Every city page has the times for its own location and the next seven mornings.
What Navkarsi and Porsi measure
Navkarsi and Porsi are pachchakkhan, vows of abstaining from food and water for a set time after sunrise. Navkarsi ends one muhurta, 48 minutes, after sunrise. Porsi lasts one prahar; Sadh Porsi one and a half; Purimaddh two, which is half of the daytime, and Avaddh three.
A prahar is a quarter of the time between sunrise and sunset, not a fixed three hours. In Mumbai it is about 3 h 19 min at the June solstice and 2 h 45 min at the December solstice, so Porsi moves on the clock through the year even when sunrise barely changes.
How this site calculates them
Every time starts from the calculated sunrise and sunset for the city’s coordinates, with a level horizon: Navkarsi is sunrise plus 48 minutes, Porsi sunrise plus a quarter of the daytime, Sadh Porsi plus three eighths and Purimaddh plus half. Times are rounded to the minute.
Communities and sects can use slightly different rules, and some panchangs add a margin. If your sangh publishes its own timetable, follow it; this page is a calculation, not a religious ruling.
Chovihar and the evening
Chovihar, giving up all four kinds of food and water for the night, has sunset as its limit. Many families finish 48 minutes before sunset. City pages on this site list sunrise and the morning vows; the sunset time for Chovihar is on each city’s page too.
