Many timetables show imsak about ten minutes before Fajr. Follow your mosque’s timetable where it differs.
When Sehri ends
Sehri, the meal before a day of fasting, must be finished by Fajr, the start of dawn. This page takes Fajr as the moment the centre of the sun is 18° below the eastern horizon, the angle of the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi, method that is widely used for timetables in India.
Many timetables also show imsak, about ten minutes before Fajr, as a margin. If your mosque publishes its own timetable, follow it; this page is a calculation, not a religious ruling.
From Sehri to sunrise
Between Fajr and sunrise there are about 70 minutes to an hour and three quarters in India: the gap is shortest near the equinoxes in Kerala and Tamil Nadu and longest in June in Kashmir. The table shows both times, and the iftar time of the same day, which is the calculated sunset.
Why it changes from city to city
With a single time zone, dawn comes much earlier on the clock in the north-east than in Gujarat. On the same morning, Sehri ends in Guwahati more than an hour before it ends in Ahmedabad.
